Bartender

My Chemist background helped me to grow as a Bartender. Helping the guests be aware of and choose the type of suitable alcohol during their visit at the restaurant. Work experience as a Bartender in super busy working hours during the nightlife of City Copenhagen was fun during 2014-2016. Having tips from the customer made me proud while I was working as a Bartender before and making drinks for the customers, because it is privileged to make someone happy. While serving as a Bartender is sometimes viewed as not a “real” job usually by people like me who have never worked in the restaurant industry. I have learned from this job to introduce myself as much as possible when greeting the customer at the bar desk if possible which helps me to boost my confidence and earn the tips as well. Establishing a good network, speaking up, and maintaining a Good Attitude are my learning from this job position.

Dish washing is not rocket science, but it is a skill that is in demand at every restaurant and is needed every day by restaurant owners to run their business smoothly. Dishwashing job is an unintelligent form of mechanical blue-collar work position at hotels, restaurants, and other food service environments. Most restaurants wash their dishes using a commercial dish machine. Dishwashing employee is responsible for washing the dirty dishes and bowls, pots and pans, glasses and cutleries, food preparation utensils either by hand or into commercial dish washing machines, and the restocking dining area and cook stations, unloading and storing deliveries. Disposal of food waste and cleaning the kitchen floor is crucial for every hotel firm. Dishwashing jobs that should never be overlooked by immigrants in overseas.

I have gone through various job titles like a cleaner, dish washer, bartender, waiter, housekeeper, delivery person and runner in the bars and hotels for not only a few months but for almost 7 years! The only reason being I wanted to settle down abroad. I worked at 20+ restaurants, and I have seen during my work experience as well as from the interviewees of men and women who migrate from their home country. My work experience abroad tells the stories of thousands of immigrants after getting good academics, training and work experience in their home country and brings their set of skills to the first world country. Many international scholars faced workplace encounters and negative experiences during their restaurant jobs in Copenhagen. I tried to reach out many other overseas fellows in Denmark, Sweden, and India during my master thesis, who settled outside of their home country and worked as a Dishwasher- one of the least noticed occupations in the tourism industry. Most of them have gone through the same pain for years. I have faced the same agony and kept encouraging myself for betterment. During my research study and work experience, I found many individuals who struggled as tourism Labour and spoiled their professional career back home, as they couldn’t find the relevant jobs based on their education and interest. People´s expectation behind migration is to choose a good career and happier life but, reality is something different.

A day in the life of waiter

Everybody should get a taste of life as a waiter, because then perhaps we would treat those who wait on us better. Working in a restaurant particularly in service-based economies such as Denmark is long and unsocial working hours, undervalued and thankless job positions. Greeting and seating guests, this role is usually seen as the first step into the culinary world for those who are passionate about food and hospitality. Taking food orders, interacting with them effectively in the kitchen and in addition, remembering the menu and offering recommendations to upsell appetizers, desserts, or drinks. I believe dealing with people of various characters is one of the toughest jobs in the world!

Pap Scrap Remover

Wake early morning at 3.00 AM and used to catch the train from Roskilde towards Copenhagen central, get off from the train at valby station and catch the bus from there to reach Nomeco pharmaceutical company at 4.00 AM – formerly known as pharmaceutical wholesaler for pharmacies, supplier for hospitals and strategic service partner for the pharmaceutical industry. Dressed up with duty uniform and have a black coffee in the canteen to warm up myself to sweep up all the floor and removed 16 containers with full of corrugated box scrap (also called PAP in Denmark) into heavy PAP sizing / squeezing machine for recycle. I must appreciate and thankful my Ethiopian colleague Seifu Gebrehiwet G, who was professor back home there at Addis Ababa and work with me at this place. I was so ramshackled those days, but some hard working and go-getting people comes in your life coincidentally and keep their never lasting impression forever. I no longer feared the darkness once I knew the phoenix in me while working with the Phoenix Company, this working experience help me to rise from nowhere.

There is a lot waiting for you in the Danish Capital. Lucky enough to share my experience with foreign tourists. Great experience of displaying the foreign culture to the foreigner visitors.

Working tirelessly the whole weekday and waiting for Friday evening, long working hours, worked within multi-cultural people from diverse demography. Truly western culture, hospitality at their best right in front of Europe’s oldest amusement park TIVOLI. The park opened on 15 August 1843 and is the third-oldest operating amusement park in the world. Having a lot of memory with and within beautiful people. I am glad to share a photograph of my colleagues who serve coffee with Omelet for breakfast and Singaporean rice with vegetable curry at lunch time. Taste, working environment and their behavior will remain in my memories all my life. Thank you for the wonderful memories

Life is all about chasing something, and that was the time where I ended up with the Bus number 400S, that dropped me at Høje Taastrup and then I could only get my train to Roskilde after every working shift at this place, This unstoppable chase ended up for another run the other day.

Working as a Dishwasher, a very normal job position for any immigrant for their bread and butter and paying the rent. It’s called a Meat packing district, located right at the city center of the capital city of Denmark – Copenhagen. Most meat suppliers are in this district and this area is full of bars and restaurants. I need to reach the restaurant in the morning, take my guard and the dirty dishes and kitchen stuff wait for my arrival. The morning reception was obviously grand, and I was welcomed in a nice way of course, I never felt ashamed of the way they were treated. I must be thankful to my Owner who treated me in a great way and gave me the opportunity when I was desperately needed. Life is full of roller coasters there, nice those days back in Copenhagen. Gone through the versatile experience as a bottom hierarchy employee in the hospitality sector.

A ship Docked in Harbour cannot face the storms

I shared many of cards of my life publicly, when I was on the journey of my life and trying to identify my identity for my own. When your ship is facing the storm in the middle of the sea, and you rectify yourself as a big zero, no hope from anywhere, people laughing at you and, and, and ‘There you are’ – you are out of your comfort zone now. No one cares about you and it is time to move on. Storm surely gets off and your ship sails again. Life is full of exciting journeys.

If you are going through one of life’s storms, just relax, take a deep breath and

laugh shoutedly. No one cares about how you handle the storm in the middle of the sea, only things that matter: did you bring your ship to sea shores or not!!

School Cleaner

Traveling 60 km daily 7 days a week and used to clean schools, museums, and special homes for special people. Life never gives me a chance to breathe and come out of this job during this period because I participated in a rat race to settle down abroad. Everyday I try to convince myself that next month I will move, but unfortunately it takes time and time has come at the right time as always. Wonderful experience, I make myself after coming out from this experience, a great learning experience that comes only once in a lifetime.
